Radio Vocabulary
Anchor – Person who hosts or narrates a newscast, usually from the studio.
Attribution – Indicating who or what a listener is hearing in a Sound Bite.
Billboards – Host previews of upcoming attractions, headlines you plan to cover in the show/hour
Field Report – Story filed from outside the studio.
Lead – First sentence of a story that answers the 5Ws & H – Who, What, When, Where, Why, & How?
Log – A record of what a station is broadcasting each hour. Records include commercials and music played.
Newscast – Broadcast of the news
Reporter – Name for an announcer in the field. On-site at the story.
Sound Bite – A clip or piece of a recorded speaker or effect, provides immediacy and credibility to a story.
Tease – A short clip that previews a segment or story. Serves to “hook” listener making them eager to hear more.
Top of the Hour – Beginning of an hour of scheduled programming.
Voicer – Story without supporting clip. Also called a Reader or Straight Read.
Wrap – Story with supporting audio clip. Story is “wrapped around” the Sound Bite.
