Unit 3B - Debates & Discussions

Listening to issues and figuring out how to navigate a discussion with an opposing viewpoint.

- Figuring out your "position" begins with hearing all sides and determining your position.

- Figuring out your "position" also requires reliable research on a topic.

- Lastly, figuring out your "position" requires personal reflection on facts and making a choice that aligns with your personal beliefs.

Examples

Presidential Debate Examples: via YouTube

"It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it."
- Joseph Joubert, French Moralist & Essayist

"When students participate in debate, they learn to study issues in depth and from perspectives,"
- Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States

"I love argument, I love debate. I don't expect anyone just to sit there and agree with me, that's not their job."
- Margaret Thatcher, Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
